HydroBlossom: Sustainable Hydroponic Farming and Local Food Systems Advocacy

At 16 years old, urban agriculturist, researcher, and climate advocate Arjun Jain is redefining localized food production through innovative, high-yield hydroponic farming. Arjun launched "HydroBlossom" in the spring of 2020 during the COVID-19 quarantine, inspired by deeply personal conversations with his grandfather about the systemic difficulties of securing affordable, clean, and responsibly grown food. What began as a backyard hobby with his father and grandfather quickly evolved into an expansive community enterprise. Gathering raw materials from a local hardware store, Arjun engineered customized soil-less hydroponic systems completely from scratch. By replacing traditional soil with sustainable alternative mediums like perlite and coco fiber, designing his own unique nutrient solutions, and establishing regulated water pumps, Arjun developed a highly efficient closed-loop system designed to minimize ecological waste. Following his grandfather’s passing, continuing and expanding the project became a profound way for Arjun to honor his grandfather's values of service and hard work.

HydroBlossom stands out from conventional community gardens through its brilliant business model and extraordinary productivity. To date, Arjun’s setups have grown and distributed more than 3,500 pounds of completely organic produce. Because of the system's exceptionally high yields, Arjun is able to sell his fresh produce directly to local consumers and restaurant partners—such as The Food Lounge—at prices well below standard supermarket rates. He seamlessly feeds this revenue stream back into HydroBlossom to fund and scale his operations. To eliminate food waste entirely, Arjun established partnerships with five local non-profit organizations and restaurants, ensuring all excess harvests are systematically donated to families in need. Overcoming trial-and-error setbacks with nutrient balances and building protective mesh barriers to ward off neighborhood pests, Arjun has demonstrated that localized agricultural solutions can be both highly reliable and community-dependent.

To precisely quantify his environmental impact, Arjun collaborated with Dr. Serpil Guran at Rutgers University to conduct research tracking carbon emissions (CO₂e), resource inputs, and water-use efficiency, benchmarking his hydroponic data directly against conventional farming. Armed with this scientific data, Arjun stepped into the realm of public policy. He presented his research to town residents at a Millburn Environmental Commission meeting, advocating for low-emission local food systems to mitigate the disproportionate climate health impacts of industrial agriculture on local air and water quality. His advocacy and co-written public op-eds successfully influenced regional policy, directly contributing to the passage of Millburn Town Ordinances 2707-25 and 2714-25. In recognition of his environmental leadership, the commission honored him with the "EcoBee of the Year" award.

Arjun's vision for sustainable agriculture reaches far beyond New Jersey's borders. He translated his engineering experience into open-source lesson plans and chapter guides, enabling individuals in other states to replicate his work and build their own local hydroponic systems. In 2025, HydroBlossom’s educational frameworks helped shape a sustainable finance curriculum for Students Teaching Finance, which is currently being adopted across 21 U.S. states and involves an estimated 300 volunteers across six countries. Outside of his agricultural pursuits, Arjun co-founded the Africa Assistance Alliance, mobilizing 120 volunteers to connect 17 NGOs across 11 African countries, and works with the Global ESG Leadership Association to secure capital for sustainable developments. A competitive soccer player who draws on athletic teamwork to fuel his environmental organizing, Arjun plans to study economics and environmental policy in college, with the long-term goal of designing practical climate action and food-justice solutions at the United Nations.
